Names for musical genres

The following can be names of musical genres:

Rock & roll
Rock
Rhythm & blues
Blues

The following cannot:

Roll
Rhythm

I'm just guessing here, but I'd say "rock" is just a truncation of "rock and roll," which was the original full name of the genre.

You can check the Wikipedia entry for "rhythm and blues" to learn the origin of that term.

Who took the roll out of the rock'n'roll? That's what I want to know. It wasn't John Cale, who recorded a song called Rollaroll. And it rocks. AND rolls.
